The international space community, comprising more than 600 organisations from 83 countries, has chosen Switzerland as the host of the 80th International Astronautical Congress (IAC), which will be held in Geneva between 8 and 12 October 2029. The successful bid was jointly spearheaded by Swissmem, the Swiss Space Industries Group and the Swiss Space Office within the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation. It received backing from the federal government, cantons, universities, international institutions and a broad alliance of companies from the Swiss technology and space industries. Securing the congress gives Switzerland a unique opportunity to bring together the global space community in a location that is almost unmatched in its commitment to innovation, international cooperation and dialogue.
The IAC is widely regarded as the foremost annual gathering for the global space sector. In excess of 10,000 representatives from space agencies, industrial companies, research institutions, start-ups and governments as well as astronauts come together to shape the future of space activities. The 2029 edition will also mark the 80th edition of the congress. What is more, the exhibition will also be open to visitors of all ages on the final day of the congress.
“Securing the congress represents a major honour for Switzerland and its innovative strength. With its international standing, neutrality and first-class infrastructure, Geneva offers ideal conditions for a global congress of this importance,” says Stefan Brupbacher, Swissmem Director and President of the Local Organising Committee.
“This is a strong signal for the Swiss space industry,” adds Raoul Keller, Secretary General of the Swiss Space Industries Group. “Our companies develop key technologies that are used in international space programmes around the world. The IAC 2029 provides an opportunity to present this innovative strength to a global audience and to establish new partnerships for the future.”
The congress will be held at the Palexpo exhibition and congress centre. With its extensive exhibition and event space and its direct connection to Geneva Airport, it offers ideal conditions for an event of this scale.
By securing the right to host the congress, Switzerland is underlining its role as a leading hub for technology, research and innovation, while also serving as a bridge between the realms of science, business and policymaking. Under the motto “Celebrating Space, Building Trust,” Geneva will become the international space community’s global meeting place in 2029.
